Seller?s Description:
1936 Jaguar Suffolk SS100 2 Dr Convertible
The company now known as Jaguar had its beginnings in the partnership between William Lyons and William Walmsley with the formation of Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922. Initially producing motocycle sidecars as the name implies, they ventured into coach building bodies for Austin motorcars. WIlliam Lyons eventually bought out Mr. Walmsley and led the company further in the direction of motorcars. Lyons worked with Standard Motor Company and had them build a frame to his specifications and SS Cars was born.
First introducing the SS1 and smaller engined SS2, by 1935 the SS90 was available and said to be capable of 90 mph. The SS100 Jaguar followed in 1936 representing a great leap in refinement and performance. This was the first automobile to bear the eventual name of the future car company Jaguar. They were also the first to display what was to become a trademark: the famous Jaguar “leaper” which Sir William Lyons described as “looking like a cat shot off a fence”. A highly significant car from the pre-war era, the SS100 Jaguar was built in very low numbers with only 198 2.5-litre and 116 3.5-litre models being produced from 1936-1939. Original examples command prices in the $500,000-1,000,000+ range.
Offered for sale is a pristine 1936 SS100 Jaguar recreation produced by Suffolk Sports Cars. These recreations have their roots with Terry Rowing who designed the TRAC SS100 as a reproduction of the original SS100 using modern mechnical parts from a Jaguar XJ saloon and a Jaguar XK engine. This business was eventually purchased by Roger WIlliams who refined the design and began Suffolk Sportscars to build these highly accurate tributes. For details of these incredible recreations, see their webcite at Suffolksportscars.com. These cars were designed to be a “visually exact reproduction of the legendary Jaguar SS100”. These cars are created to a meticulous standard and cost over $200,000.00 should you want to commission a new build. With less than 350 being produces to date, examples on the secondary market come up very rarely.
