In 1936, only five years after beginning production, SS startled the motoring public with the Jaguar 21?2 litre saloon, the company?s first car to feature overhead valves. The engine was the robust seven-bearing six-cylinder unit built by Standard, but with a new cylinder head designed by Harry Weslake and Bill Heynes. With 104bhp, smoothly delivered, flowing lines, a gearbox which made the best of the power, and a new chassis, it was the model which made the company?s reputation. ?Jaguar? was then only a model name, but it was adopted as the company?s name after ?SS? had acquired unfortunate connotations during the war.
If the Jaguar saloon created excitement, it was as nothing compared to the SS Jaguar 100. No sports car better epitomises the late 1930s which is why it has been the model for so many modern ?nostalgia? cars. It looked right from every angle and age has not withered its beauty.
Every aspect was in harmony. Stone guards over the huge headlights, the long louvred bonnet and large wire wheels were aggressive, yet the flowing lines were silkily feline. It had the grace of a prowling cat.
This wonderful example was built by Suffolk Jaguar in 2012 and registered as a Jaguar 4.2 litre Sports which carries an Historic registration number. It is fitted with the powerful 4.2 litre with twin 2 inch SU HS8 carburettors and choke unit with electric fan. The engine has been re manufactured by VSE to fast road specification specifically for this car and as such has a high performance cylinder head. The starter has been rebuilt as has its alternator, distributor and water pump. There is a full stainless steel 6 branch manifold headers and full twin pipe exhaust system fitted. To the rear of the car is fitted a Salisbury differential and the gearbox is a Jaguar short compact 4 speed with overdrive unit. The bodywork is GRP and steel with a louvered alloy bonnet and is certainly an accurate recreation of the famous 1938 Jaguar SS 100. The car is presented in Silver with Claret Red Connolly leather with matching Wilton carpets and Moto- Lita steering wheel. This wonderful open British sports car also comes with sidescreens, tonneau cover, hoodbag, fitted hood in black mohair and aeroscreens, windwings and luggage rack. The car also sits on 18? 72 chrome spoke wheels and Blockley high performance tyres. The car is carefully looked after and is serviced annually with only 10,997 miles covered.
